Solar Energy Project at Watopot

The idea of setting up Solar Energy system in Watopot was brought forward by students of Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) in December 2015.   The students from HKUST Connect have been paying regular visits to Watopot for several years already and they have been working hard in improving the environment of the Community ever since.  When the administrator of HKUST brought us the idea of installing Solar Energy system in Watopot, we were thrilled and also a bit worried about the possibility of really implementing it.
Students of HKUST, together with their professors had approached several Solar Energy companies, hoping to hook up the best and the most economically viable solution for Watopot.  Trips had been done in order for them to do researches and site visiting were also being carried out by them together with the Energy Company. After a few months, they came back with a concrete proposal (at the amount of US$22,500) and then money were being raised in 2016 and 2017 in order to accomplish the goal.  The HKUST students had done well in raising a lot of funds, meanwhile, Sakka had also found a generous donor, Crystal International Group Ltd, to support the establishment of the Solar Energy System in Watopot.

HKUST students went over in June 2017 to lay out the foundation for the platform where all the panels would be installed. All the kids in Watopot also joined and put in their hard efforts, even the little one!
The installation of the Solar panels were finally done in August 2017 and now the Community has an on-grid Solar Energy System that promises to save them a lot on their electricity bills.
The Solar Panels are nicely fenced off so no kids or animals can reached into the area.
With the dry season of Cambodia coming and sun shining all day through, we are looking forward to see a big improvement in the Community very soon!
