Solar Project Funding with HKUST Students

Picture

This begins with a real experience in Cambodia from us…

Children travel from a long way by bicycle and by foot to Who Will Village with a smiley face just for attending a class.

But we witnessed their dejection when classes are suspended due to ELECTRICITY CUTOFF. We felt so sorry to tell them that we could not continue with the activities that we planned for them, and watching them leaving with sad faces while spending another hours back home was distressing. This is the situation that usually happened……

Enable the Future

The overwhelming majority of Cambodian children lack quality education, and this issue is even worse in rural areas. They would like to study, but the education fees has imposed a huge burden for their families. Left without a choice, some of them eventually drop out from school. Cambodians understand that education is the driving force of future developments, but they are unable to obtain quality education due to insufficient financial resources and managerial support.

NGOs such as Who Will Village have been extending a helping hand to make the world a better place. Despite their ambition to help disadvantaged children in their community, they face many problems that are very real. Electricity is often cut off due to unstable supplies, which causes classes to be cancelled as there is no light. Something as minor as a flick of a switch for us is actually a great deal for these Cambodian children who are eager to learn, and strongly believe that education can change their lives better. Additionally, the high cost of electricity in Cambodia (~USD$0.25/kWh) is a huge burden to Who Will Village and it is difficult to sustain its operations in the long run.

We see that Who Will Village has unobstructed access to sunlight for most of the day.  Developing an off-grid solar panel system can tackle the problem of expensive and unstable electricity. Furthermore, solar energy is a green, renewable and sustainable resource.
Why don’t we utilize this resource that they have to sustain their future developments?

Who we are

We are a group of students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and we visited several NGOs in Cambodia for a service trip last June. Who Will village left us a deep impression. We spent time teaching and playing with the children, and they were very determined and eager to learn. We hope that electricity cutoff will not be a problem in the future.

Tough Situation in Who Will

A small NGO taking care of poor Cambodian communities, Who Will provides education for the disadvantaged and orphaned children. Some classes are held for both children inside and outside the village by voluntary teachers from Hong Kong and Australia. Children there were having tough yet satisfying time, but recent loss of sponsorships has worsened the situation. Who Will has recently been undergoing operating difficulties and the problem of electricity shortage is especially severe.

We are going to make a change

Therefore, to help Who Will village achieve energy self-sufficiency, we seek to raise fund to alleviate Who Will’s problem of electricity shortage by building a solar energy system that can last for 25 years. Not only will this benefit the children in Who Will, it will also promote the use of sustainable energy in Cambodia, a country with no stable source of electricity.

We have secured an offer from a solar panel company which has generously offered to sell us the solar panel system at zero profit for our cause. We also have other students from HKUST who have gladly volunteered to help install the solar panel system should we be successful. We hope you can help us complete the project by helping us raise the amount we need to realize this project.

Give the world a helping hand

We believe that a small change can make a big difference. There is no donation too small. We value each and every dollar, and you can make things happen. You can secure the children a stable electricity supply for the next 25 years.

You can support us by contributing:
  1. A solar panel at USD558 (HKD4353). We need 45 of them to support the daily operations at Who Will village.A month of electricity expense at USD200 (HKD1560). This amount is what Who Will village is currently paying every month to support the children’s education.
  2. A week of electricity expense at USD 50 (HKD 390). This amount is what Who Will village is currently paying every week to support the children’s education.
  3. Any other amount.

We believe that every dollar counts, and it will help us to reach our fundraising goal. You can make a difference for the children. You can ensure that the children in Who Will will have a better learning environment and better future.
